About PEP

On April 16 2015, 18 teachers from Pin@y Educational Partnerships (PEP) San Francisco will be traveling to Chicago, Illinois to attend American Educational Research Association's (AERA) Annual Meeting, the largest gathering of scholars in the field of education research. AERA is a showcase for ground-breaking, innovative studies in diverse array of areas--from early education through higher education. The 2015 Annual Meeting, with an expected attendance of more than 14,000, will feature over 2,600 sessions.

We will be presenting in a session titled "Making Filipina/o Students' Voices Matter: Pin@y Educational Partnerships' Teacher Participatory Action Research".  This session focuses on the development of an innovative research methodology known as “Teacher Participatory Action Research” (TPAR). Through this session, we hope to offer ways that educators, teachers, and students together can work towards deep transformative change in their schools and communities. For some of the teachers, this will be their first time presenting scholarly research in such a setting.

Our goal is to raise $6,000 dollars to cover air travel to/from Chicago and logding costs in the surrounding area for 18 teachers. Any contribution is greatly appreciated. Opportunities like this are incredibly important to us and the students and communities we serve. Maraming Salamat! Isang bagsak!

Established in 2001, the Pin@y Educational Partnerships (PEP) is a Filipina/o American service-learning educational leadership pipeline and community-based research space that aims to create educational partnerships and projects that work towards social justice. PEP is a partnership between San Francisco State University’s (SFSU) Asian American Studies Department, San Francisco public schools, and the Filipino Community Center (FCC). PEP connects undergraduate and graduate students who have an interest in pursuing careers in the field of education, with community college, high school, middle school, and elementary school students who are primarily from low-income backgrounds. One of the main objectives for the PEP Program is to reach out to the students who are underperforming their potential to provide them the support and opportunities necessary to achieve their goals.
